Meanwhile I should assume Redd is a dude.
also I thought they didn’t teach Catcher in the Rye in high school? Because Holden’s a dick lmao. And it’s not really a coming of age story. I related to Holden because we both have depression and my depression has made me act out like a dick before, just like Holden does.
lol just watch someone call me pretentious for liking this book haha but yeah, I liked it but a lot of people obviously don’t get what the book is even about. Obviously, since OP thinks it’s about coming of age and not a teenage boy acting like an asshole because of his mental health issues which were not taken care of very well back then.
They must not read alot because there are PLENTY of coming of age stories feationg people of color also have they not heard of African-American literature, they have a whole section dedicated to it! Dumb ass! Go to a fucking library, don’t rely on school to teach you everything you want to know, find shit for yourself!
lol of course they don’t read a lot. Seriously, just take a class on American Lit and you learn about African-American writers and the boom in the arts in the African-American community in Harlem.
I mean, shit, we read Raisin in the Sun and one of the main characters is an African-American women in college to be a doctor when females rarely became doctors and people were pressuring her to be a nurse but SHE DIDN’T GIVE IN.
I have a love/hate relationship with that book, everyone else was great, but I couldn’t stand the dad.
I remember in middle school everyone read these popular African American series books called “The Bluford Series” they all featured a different character at times, maybe a reoccurring one, and they all lived in an urban city, all attended the high school. It was a bit more drama filled than needed to be, but it gave good solutions to real problems.
Or how about the best version of Romeo and Juliet(in my school’s opinion) Romeitta and Julio? The story of two teens a black girl and a latino guy falling in love despite a racist gang trying to keep them apart?
There are so many to choose from.
